“Our work also opens the speculative possibility that some planets could have cycles fueled by fossil fuels of construction and collapse of civilization,” explains Professor Frank in the research published in the International Journal of Astrobiology. “If a civilization uses fossil fuels, the climate change they cause can lead to a large decrease in ocean oxygen levels. These low levels of oxygen (called ocean anoxia) help unleash the conditions necessary to make fossil fuels such as oil and coal.
