Pedro Duque , the astronaut who the new Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, has chosen as Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities has expressed his opinion about aliens.
In 1998, Pedro Duque became the first Spanish citizen in space. There he spent nine days overseeing an experimental module of the European Space Agency (ESA). Five years later he would repeat with the Cervantes Mission, visiting the International Space Station for ten days. Now he is the new Minister of Science of the Government of Spain.
For those who have become a figure referring to when talking about the cosmos and does so with authority, not always free of controversy in their statements. Therefore, when he was interviewed in the program Esperando a Chester and affirmed that the possibility that we are alone in the universe is minimal, many people were tempted to answer him.
But Duque is not the only expert who believes in extraterrestrials. Stephen Hawking claimed that for his mathematical brain only numbers made him believe that the existence of aliens is perfectly possible. The neuronal mathematics of the British was based on a simple calculation: the space mission Kepler has allowed to deduce that there are at least 40,000 million planets in habitable zones of our galaxy. And that the Milky Way is only one of at least 100,000 million galaxies in the universe. It is obvious that Seth Shostak, director of the SETI also trusts the existence of alien life, otherwise his work would not make sense.
Pedro Duque has also referred to China’s interest in space to discover that “you can get benefits and technological developments that pass to other industries” and has assured that there are “real battles” in Chinese engineering schools to enter . As a counterpoint it has referred to the situation in Spain and Europe, where there are not enough technical vocations and “you have to bring people from India” .
In his opinion, it is necessary to “excite young people” who are in schools thinking “what they are going to do” . For Duque, the main objective is “for young people to understand that with knowledge, you have a good time, knowing what you understand and understanding you enjoy” . As for space tourism, he recalled that the US it has a complete regulation and in Europe it is trying “to make the relevant regulation” .
What is most surprising about Pedro Duque’s claims is not that he believes in extraterrestrial life, but that his discourse has changed a lot since a few years ago, when he said that we would never see them. Why the change? Very easy. Until that year the number of habitable planets discovered numbered 594.
Since then more than doubled have been added to the list, 1,209 new planets discovered in just a few years. The astronomical figure has made the NASA scientists conclude that in 2025 we will find extraterrestrial life. What do you think? Leave your comment below!
